A Slice of Strawberry Shortcake is an amalgamation of flavors, boasting femme and gender nonconforming heavyweights spattered across the globe. Each track delivers distinct punches: from nextdimensional’s bass-heavy ethereal dreamscape to ROW92’s melodic drum and bass hellscape. JIALING takes us for a ride on a megabus careening down I95 and Zvrra’s Japanese video-game-inspired track Leap, draws on FM synthesis and an enemy boss encounter. As the first compilation album released by Banana Pudding Records, A Slice of Strawberry Shortcake presses that queer and femme artists are fundamental to the bourgeoning electronic scene.

1. nextdimensional
"flavors" is a track inspired by nextdimensional's experiences attending Minneapolis' "SYSTEM" parties as an early-20s raver; she wanted to create a track that you can feel in your whole body. Play on a system with a good sub for the full experience <3

2. JIALING
"I95 was written on I95 on a megabus in 2021. Public transportation is honestly how I started to practice producing. It makes time go faster."

3. DJ Girl
Jasmine is a cascading and playful techno jammer with a Detroit focus in mind.

4. DJ Delish
"This track exclusively samples my own production, and is a true representation of my past decade of sound design and sample preparation. It’s also a great way to get an idea of what my work entails, and how I approach music production."

5. Zvrra
Leap is an energetic dance record inspired by Japanese video game music composers along with the techno and house vibes of Detroit. The beginning sequence of the song pays attention to the limitations of the Yamaha YM2612, an FM synthesis sound chip inside the Sega Genesis gaming console. According to Zvrra, the record was inspired by the soundtrack in Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master during the first enemy boss encounter.

6. ROW92
"My vision for this track was to show the essence of insanity and the chaotic energy among the twisted dark minds these days in my hometown (of Tehran?). The dark situation here and protests fighting against freedom: holding a parade in his honor in the massive fires of hell.

The sounds are taken from the UK scene, which have been formed into a huge wave using drums and heavy acid bass, put together using my imagination. It's been a kinda drum and bass journey created by me."

7. Chelita
"Searching was a track I made during a time where I wanted to release some pent up emotions I was holding. As a result, this song came out of it and it was my first track produced. It holds a lot of story behind it and that's what I love about it. Searching tells a story."
